Event Details
Bernina Gran Turismo is a creation by a group of classic car enthusiasts, with the aim of organising a hillclimb event to celebrate the Races held in the St. Moritz area in the 1920s and ’30s. The project will see a blend of history, sport, competition and authentic rough luxury, the goal being to offer a unique combination and experience.
The event will be a hillclimb race on a closed road for sports and racing cars built up to the early 1980s along the Bernina pass, from La Rösa up to the Bernina Hospiz: 5,6 kilometres of pure adrenalin in an inimitable Alpine setting. It is a unique opportunity to have a mountain pass all to yourself to let your classic car do all it can do!
The date has been chosen to take advantage of the beautiful colours of the end-of-summer and of the great driving roads, free from the high summer traffic, to encourage the participants and the enthusiasts to come to the Engadine with their classic car and enjoy a beautiful tour. The best from the St. Moritz hospitality, together with an insider experience of the Engadine tradition, will make sure this will be a complete event for racers as well as guests, and for car owners and public alike. Please keep watching this site as more and more details will be posted in the next weeks.
The Bernina Gran Turismo was launched in 2014 in a professional manner by Kurt Engelhorn and Florian Seidl, with the team around Luca Moiso and Claus Müller after unsuccessful attempts. The aim was and is to keep the memory of the legendary Bernina Race of 1929 and 1930 alive and to secure it in the long term with new impulses. At that time the highlight of the International St. Moritz Automobile Week, the new edition of this mountain race also achieved world fame within a few years and is today rightly regarded as the best mountain race for historic vehicles.
The fine mixture of historic mobility, automobile sport, competition and modern luxury provides participants with a unique and unforgettable experience. The Bernina Gran Turismo takes place on a section of the original route on the Bernina Pass that has been specially closed for the mountain race. On the 5.7 km from La Rösa to the top of the pass there are more than 50 curves – pure adrenaline! In the process, a total of around 450 meters of altitude are overcome. The possibility of having the pass road all to oneself, in the midst of the high alpine environment, offers the perfect driving fun. The Bernina Gran Turismo is designed for classic racing and sports cars from the pre- and post-war period, up to the 1990 model year – whereby the more modern, the more exotic a potential participant vehicle must be.
The fixed place in the international racing calendar in September was chosen to enjoy the wonderful colors of autumn on the one hand and the roads without the heavy traffic of the main season on the other. This should encourage participants and visitors alike to come to the picturesque Engadine with their classic vehicles and combine the event with a visit to this impressive landscape. The hospitality of the St. Moritz region, as well as the typical Engadine traditions, make the Bernina Gran Turismo an event that leaves nothing to be desired, not only for the drivers and their teams, but also for all guests, visitors and car enthusiasts.
